Monnow Valley Challenge Walk

Start & finish point: The Monnow Bridge, Monmouth (SO 504 125) Postcode: NP25 3EG on both days.

Distance: Day 1 – 19.5 miles. Day 2 – 21 miles.

Time to walk: Approx 10 hours each day

Description: Walk the whole of the Monnow Valley in two days! A challenging walk in the historic border country between Wales and England.

This is a strenuous walk that will be led at a good pace on both days to complete each section before it is dark. There are approximately 20 miles of walking each day and on both days it is anticipated that the walk will finish by 6pm. Minibus transport is provided from the Old Monnow Bridge in Monmouth at 07:15a.m. each day.

Day 1. Hay on Wye to Walterstone. The walk begins with a climb south out of Hay on Wye, soon joining the head waters of the Monnow below Hay Bluff. From here it follows an undulating route trough the historic villages of Craswell, Longtown and Clodock before finishing in Walterstone.

Day 2. Walterstone to Monmouth. The walk begins steadily, making its way to the pretty village of Grosmont before heading sharply up the Graig. From here the route goes on to Skenfrith, Tregate, Rockfield and on to finish in Monmouth.

Terrain: Day 1 – Initial climb from Hay to Hay Bluff then undulating. Day 2 – Mostly undulating with a stiff climb over the Graig south of Grosmont and another sharp climb south of Skenfrith.

For your rucksack: Packed lunch and enough drink for the day. Waterproofs and good walking footwear essential.

Price: £17.50 per ticket. Day 1 and day 2.
