Llanthony Priory

Distance: Approx 10 miles

Time to walk: Approx 5 hours

Description: You can’t get any higher than this! Walk to the highest point in Monmouthshire. A fairly energetic walk in the Black Mountains. Starting at Llanthony Priory we will head steeply up along the Beacons Way to the Bal-Mawr ridge and then on up to Chwarel y Fan the highest point in Monmouthshire. After hopefully admiring the magnificent views we descend, past the old Monastery to Capel-y-ffin and then return south enjoying the views along the slopes of the Llanthony Valley.

Terrain: Serious slopes and steep descents. Several stiles.

For your rucksack: A packed lunch and of course a camera for those magnificent views!

Monmouth Town Walk

Monnow Bridge

Start & finish point: The walk will start at Drybridge House (NP25 5AS) and finish at The Shire Hall (NP25 3DY).

Distance: Approx 4 miles

Time to walk: Approx 2 hours

Description: Enjoying a 2,000 year walk into Monmouth’s past, we leave
Drybridge House passing St.Thomas’s Church, through the archway of Monnow Bridge on our way to the site of Monmouth County Gaol. We go onto Monmouth Quay on the banks of the River Wye before visiting The Nelson Garden (which will be opened specially). Retracing our steps we will finish our walk at The Shire Hall, where we will be treated to a guided tour of this unique historic building.

Terrain: Town Walk.

For your rucksack: Some loose change as there are plenty of opportunities to take refreshments at the many pubs, cafes and restaurants in the town.

Time to walk: 2 to 2.5 hours

Description: Are you new to walking or want to attempt more challenging walks but are concerned about getting lost? Perhaps you walk regularly but want to update your skills? Then Monmouthshire Walking Festival has an event for you! We’ve teamed up with Treads and Trails (one of Monmouthshire’s leading outdoor activity companies) to offer a navigation course for walkers.

The course will consist of an introduction to the basic principles followed by a practical session to develop your skills. The course will last 2 to 2.5 hours and aims to develop your skills in map reading and navigation.

Note: This course is repeated on Friday 29th June at Chepstow Tourist Information Centre.

For your rucksack: Your compass, handheld GPS or GPS enabled mobile phone.

Craig y Cilau Circuit

Escarpment

Date: Wednesday 27th June 2012 9:30a.m.

Start & finish point: Park Drive, Llangattock opposite the Horseshoe Inn (SO 211178) Post code NP8 1PA. Parking on roadside of a “No Through Road”.

Distance: Approx 8 miles

Time to walk: Approx 5 hours

Description: A walk from Llangattock across the Monmouthshire and Brecon canal and up a very steep slope to the Llangattock escarpment. At the top it joins an old tramway and there is an outstanding panorama of the Black Mountains and beyond. Our guide, a keen caver, will then take you past the cave entrances of Darren Cilau, Eglwys Faen and Agen Allwedd, before the route then descends to Craig y Cilau, a National Nature Reserve. Here you will see a compelling combination of natural and industrial history. We return via farmland and the canal.

Terrain: One very steep slope. In parts very rough underfoot due to loose stones.

For your rucksack: A packed lunch. Bring a torch if you want to explore the cave entrances.

Resistance And Revenge

Cwmyoy Church

Start & finish point: Queen’s Head pub car park, Cwmyoy (SO311221). Post code: NP7 7NE

Distance: Approx 8 miles

Time to walk: Approx 5 hours

Description: A circular walk along quiet paths in the Black Mountains – setting for the book ‘Resistance’ written by local author Owen Sheers. The film of the book was recorded in and around the area. We will be visiting the beautiful church at Cwmyoy with its leaning tower, the Darren cliffs, a commemorative stone and an ancient hill fort passing old farms on the way. We should have great views of the hills around Abergavenny, the Black Mountains and Llanthony valley. (Please note there are no toilets on this walk.)

Terrain: A moderate walk with one steep slope, several stiles, some rough ground and possible muddy paths. Short stretches of lane and minor road walking.

For your rucksack: £1 for parking. A packed lunch. (Food will be available after the walk at a real country pub. Please advise at time of booking this walk if you wish to eat).

Two Foxes

Start & finish point: Pen-ffordd-goch pond (Keeper’s Pond) car park. (SO254107)

Distance: Approx 10 miles

Time to walk: Approx 6.5 hours

Description: This 10 mile walk starts at Pen-ffordd-goch pond (Keeper’s Pond) going via Foxhunters grave onto the summit of the Blorenge to take in the fabulous views of Abergavenny and the Usk valley. After visiting the Punchbowl (a lovely man-made lake) the track leads us to the old tram road, down the so-called ‘big drop’ to the Llanfoist boat house. Following the Monmouthshire and Brecon Canal to Govilon, we then wind our way back up the side of Gilwern Hill to the Lamb and Fox Inn returning via moorland. (Please note there are no toilets on this walk.)

Terrain: Moderate walk with several stiles, one gradual and one steep incline traffic on country lanes.

For your rucksack: A packed lunch. (Food will be available after the walk at a real country pub. Please advise at time of booking this walk if you wish to eat). Bring a camera as there are many opportunities to see wildlife, scenery and local history.
