Views of an Unchanging Landscape

Walk Leader: Angela Flynn and Diana Standing

Date: Monday 21st October 2012 09:30a.m.

Start & finish point: Monmouth Leisure Centre (SO512131).

Distance: Approx 13 miles

Time to walk: Approx 7 hours

Description: This walk starts and finishes in Monmouth, an ancient market town serving the local farms and villages. It passes near the boundaries of Gloucestershire and Herefordshire with extensive views over all 3 counties. This is an ancient rural landscape with a scatter of farms, woods and old track ways.

We leave Monmouth and after a short stretch down the A466, the route turns and we follow the valley side towards Buckholt Farm. From here most of the walk can be seen on the skyline. We head up into Buckholt Wood where there are many signs of deer and badgers as well as the remains of a former settlement. It’s not long before we have fabulous views over the Black Mountains, Hergest Ridge and Herefordshire. As the walk proceeds, the view extends to include the Malverns, the Forest of Dean and Wye Valley. We pass St Wulstan’s Farm and the track we follow shows signs of the old route and is lined by large pollarded beeches. Passing the site of Kennel Farm, the views once more open up over the Wye Valley and Wyastone Leys. Downhill for about 1.5 miles where we join Newton Court Lane, the last view now opens up and overlooks Monmouth and the surrounding hills. We rejoin our outward route and thence back to Monmouth.

Terrain: : Mainly on easy footpaths and tracks, some gentle uphill sections. Some road walking. Several stiles, some with a high step up. One steep downhill following a hollow way which is stony and sometimes wet. Some muddy sections if wet.

Description: Leaving the village of Redbrook we walk up part of Valley Brook and have a fairly short climb up to Coxbury Lane where there are far reaching views over the River Wye. We join up with another pretty valley, the Slade Brook which is an SSSI due to the presence of tufa dams in the brook. We stop here for lunch and then climb through Leyshill Wood and cross fields at the edge of Clearwell Quarry to pass through the hamlet of Stowe Green and onto Margery Lane and Rookery Lane, both quiet but metalled roads. We then go downhill on a rough track and into the village of Newland and visit All Saints Church which dates back to the early 1200s. We return downhill on a fairly steep narrow path through Forge Woods and return to Redbrook.
