Distance: Approx 16 miles

Time to walk: Approx 7 hours

Description: A long walk in a largely unexplored area of the county. This walk heads out of the pretty town of Usk to visit the hills, woodland and farmland south east of the town. There are extensive views over the Usk Valley. The walk passes through part of the Springdale farm nature reserve run by the Gwent Wildlife Trust which in autumn is known for its displays of fungi. Another treat is the recently renovated medieval farm house of Allt-y-Bela. If you’re not familiar with the south west corner of the county, this is the walk to change that!

Terrain: Several steep climbs and descents and numerous stiles. Some road walking and may be muddy in places. A good level of fitness is needed for this walk.

For your rucksack: A packed lunch, drinks and of course a camera.

Black Mountains Challenge Walk

Start & finish point: Car Park, Llanthony Priory, (SO289278) Postcode: NP7 7NN on both days.

Distance: Day 1 – 16 miles. Day 2 – 16 miles.

Time to walk: Approx. 8 hours each day

Description: Two days of challenging walks in the beautiful Black Mountains. Walk all of Monmouthshire’s official mountains and more over two days. This is a strenuous walk that will be led at a good pace on both days.

Day 1: A circular walk west of the Vale of Ewyas taking in the stunning views, summits and ridgeways of the Black Mountains. A real challenge with steep ascents and descents, reaching a height of 800m on Pen Y Gadair Fawr. The second half takes us through the beautiful Mynydd Du forest before returning to Llanthony.

Day 2: We start with a steep climb up to Loxidge Tump for some amazing views over two valleys, Ewyas and Olchon, before walking Offa’s Dyke National Trail to Hay Bluff. Heading down to Gospel Pass for a well-earned break, we then ascend to Twmpa before trailing Darren Llwyd into Capel-y-ffin. Finally we follow the Afon Honddu cross country and back into Llanthony.

Toilets and parking at start/finish. Hotel/Pubs/Inns in Llanthony for accommodation/meals/drinks. Campsites also available nearby.

Terrain: Mainly rocky mountain paths and grassy, muddy woodland trails. Several steep ascents and descents. Some stiles.

For your rucksack: Plenty of water/drinks needed, fruit/nuts/energy snacks, packed lunch, walking poles (if preferred), walking gear for all weathers (waterproofs and good walking footwear essential).
